Estimated Coastal Intersections

Notes

ASCAT passes are first predicted daily using orbital TLE information*. Each nadir path, with a blind range of 336km on each side with an individual swath width of 550km, is then compared to a US coastline shape file to determine coastal intersection of the swath half. The median of the closest points within 200km to the coast is exported as the coastal intersection location/time and accounts for both direct intersections and nearby passes. All times are in UTC. All images are assigned to coastal zones following NWS Coastal/Great Lake region boundaries based on where the median of the swath intersects with the coastline. As such, coastal images may span through multiple coastal regions, such as the boundary between the Gulf of America coast and the Southern coast.

Ascending passes are in red. Descending passes are in black.

*Predictions are made by propagating orbital information obtained from TLEs into the future. These are subject to change and, as such, predictions may not be perfect. Additionally, the time period in each image covers a 24-hour period starting 00:00Z with no date rollover.
